We teach our students to be skilled, confident readers and writers who love to read and write. Our literacy instruction is grounded in Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading, which emphasize the explicit, systematic teaching of every aspect of literacy: language skills, decoding, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and the rules of language. Built on current research on how the brain learns to read, our instruction is explicit, and students quickly put their skills to work with real books, rich conversation, and their own writing. Because we know each child deeply, we meet every student where they are in every grade: students who need additional support receive targeted, responsive instruction, and students ready for more are challenged with greater depth and complexity, so that every child grows as a strong, independent reader and writer. At the same time, our teachers model a love of the written word and of our strong oral tradition, nurturing literacy-rich classrooms where students experience the joy of reading and writing across genres. Students learn how language works, then use it to think, question, argue, and express themselves. Reading and writing happen across the curriculum, in Judaic and general studies alike, so students practice and deepen their skills as they study Jewish texts, joining a tradition that has always prized literacy and learning.
