Beit Rabban has a unique approach to individualizing the curriculum to each child's developmental needs in a social setting. Because we appreciate the varied learning styles and ways in which children grow and develop in different areas, the school is structured and the day is scheduled to allow for the greatest flexibility in the ways children are grouped for learning. Mixed age classes and small learning groups ensure that each child can be challenged and allowed to take the next step whatever that may be for that child.
Children, therefore, have the experience of learning with both younger and older children. In Explorations, children work in smaller groups engaging in activities having to do with their interdisciplinary unit, or work alone or with classmates on a short-term or long-term project of their own interest. In Reading, Math, Hebrew, and Chumash, children work with a teacher in a smaller group, according to their level of experience, ability, and learning style.
Students at Beit Rabban are encouraged to become self-motivated learners and, to this end, we do not use grades or formal tests in the elementary school as a form of assessment. Students learn to experience the joy of mastery that comes with figuring out how to solve a problem on one's own, practicing and learning a skill, or creating work over a period of time. Teachers continually set goals with students and evaluate and assess their progress while also engaging the children in reflective conversations about their work. Throughout the year children and teachers select pieces that represent a child's best work in various subjects and create a portfolio with every child each year. In addition to this portfolio teachers write a detailed end-of-year narrative documenting each child's progress in all areas of learning.
The dedicated faculty at Beit Rabban works closely with a school psychologist and with learning specialists and other outside agencies to meet the special educational needs of each individual student. Systems, procedures, and individual education plans are designed to address social, emotional, behavioral, and academic concerns and to ensure that each child thrives in school and reaches his/her potential.
